San Juan 2016: a cultural bridge between the Basque Country and Canada

January 21, 2015

Find out how the rebuilding of a 16th century whaling ship, the San Juan, taking place in Pasaia, in the Basque country,  is a key cultural undertaking of San Sebastian 2016. The city of San Sebastian has been selected as European capital of culture for 2016 and will share with the world a rich cultural agenda. Indeed, 2016 is definitely a great year to plan a trip to San Sebastian.  The San Juan,  is one of San Sebastian 2016 key cornerstones  to promote the themes of coexistence, participation and social transformation as well as the transmission of positive human values .
For Canadians, this project has some particular resonance since the San Juan was found in 1978, by Parks Canada and its archaeological team of experts and divers, off the coast of New Foundland, near Red Bay. The folks associated to this project in Pasaia  ALBAOLA, also nicknamed the Basque Maritime Factory, have developed over the years a tight partnership with Parks Canada, another powerful bridge that has made this project possible.
The photo below is one I took last Summer as construction started. Indeed construction is happening live in front of the eyes of  visitors along with quality guided tours.  Make a point to visit! For more info, check this site.
