Rather than relying on a car, slow down and allow your body and mind to feel the region. You might see less and experience more. You discover the soul of the places you walk through and the people you meet along the way.

Here are two easy hiking trips that can be taken separately or back to back to explore distinct aspects of the region. Alternatively keep in mind that you can do lots of daily hikes from your vacation home with short back and forth drives or pre-arranged pick ups and drop offs.

The coastal path or ''le sentier du littoral''

Over a FOUR day period, explore 25 easy kilometers of the Basque coast,  between Biarritz & the Spanish border. The path overlooks the surfs of the Atlantic ocean and takes you through natural parks with rocky cliffs and sandy beaches, residential areas,  charming and historic towns. Stay at a fine boutique B&B, a small Relais & Château 4* hotel , and a parador all strategically located in both France and Spain. Enjoy a slow-paced life like the locals in trendy coastal towns: Biarritz, St Jean de Luz, Fuentarrabia.

Inland villages and the traditional Basque mountain

Over a FOUR day period, explore one of the best section of the GR10 mountain path, an established route for hikers that connects the Atlantic ocean to the Mediterranean sea. Here you experience the green Basque mountains like a Basque shepherd without needing to be a well-trained athlete. You also walk through attractive villages across two Basque provinces, by the Iparla crests and Irouleguy vineyards. You arrive in St Jean Pied de Port, a key stop for pilgrims heading down to St James of Compostella.   Stay at an upscale inn in the mountains, owned by Alain Ducasse, then proceed to a château Charlie Chaplin called home for a few summers, to finally relax at 4 star hotel/ Michelin starred restaurant.
